Yes I’m from human 6!! I’m so confused too. I have my list of questions i’m gunna ask tonight. I think the teacher wanted us to come on here and write no prob?? Atleast that’s what her last e-mail said.
I am glad that everyone is confused as well. Because of my job, I will be unable to make tonights meeting. Any pertinent information on the blog will be helpful. thanks
Hello to everyone! My name is Crystal and I am taking this course mainly because it sounded so interesting, but also because I am majoring in Criminal Justice. I do know a lot of people that have been to prison (family and friends) and some that are still there. It’s funny to me how other people react when they hear that someone has been to prison, they sometimes act scared of that person or think they are horrible. These days people can go to prison for almost any crime so prisons are full of all different types of people. Personally I believe in people changing so I am very openminded when it comes to meeting new people. As far as the dealth penalty, I honestly don’t know how I feel about it. Part of me thinks of how cruel it is and how it won’t change the fact of what that person did or even teach them anything because they are dead and the other part of me feels that people should be treated as “Eye for an Eye”. Even that, what about people that rape others and are sentenced to death they are not receiving the same thing that they may have done to someone else. Maybe as I am educated more on this I may have a different view on the death penalty so I look forward to what I will learn here. Good luck to everyone!!
Hi,
I am taking this class because I find the subject matter interesting, and it’s online. I thought that I knew exactly how I felt about the death penalty until I read Dead Man Walking. Now I am not so sure.
Hi Everyone,
My name is Dawn Rash. I am taking this class because I find the subject matter interesting. I also needed to take an online class to fit into my schedule. I thought that I knew how I felt about the death penalty, but after reading Dead Man Walking, I’m not so sure.
Hi. My name it Matt and I am a firefighter in Marin County. This is my second go around in this class (I had to drop last semester due to a scheduling conflict) and I am looking forward to completing it this time. I know from last semester that there are a whole lot of different opinions about the death penalty and as many different reasons for those opinions. Personally, I don’t agree with the death penalty. I don’t think that it is the job of the government to kill people. Our society is obviously against murder and murderers need to be locked up for the safety of the public. Killing someone who has killed does not prevent future killing any more than locking them up for the rest of their life. Not to mention that killing someone is an irreversable act. If just one person is put to death that was innocent then the act of executing them makes the government no better than any killer. Killing is killing in my opinion and I am against it. I think when it comes to life there is no grey area. There is no good reason to kill. Anyway, I have a lot more to say about this subject but I will wait for future discussions.
Hi All. I’m Ray I’ve recently been laid off and I’m looking for a job, but in the mean time, I might as well collect some knowledge. I’m against the Death Penalty because everyone has their own environment, experiences and situations to make them the way they are, so who are we to kill someone because they did something “wrong”. Maybe to them killing a family member of mine is right. What is right and wrong? But, if someone killed one of my family members then I’d want to kill them. But yet again, is the person who killed my family member the same person as today? I’m against the death penalty.
We were suppose to post intros in the other blog known as i guess “the Professors” blog. Why does everyone keep saying no prob?? Did she actually want us to write that??
Hello . My name is Lynda and I am taking the class as a transfer requirement. I am excited about the subject we will be studying and I look forward to the next few months of digging into the life and writing of prisoners. I do not personally know anyone who has spent time in prison but I do have strong feeling about the death penalty. For many years I believed those guilty of murder have no right to life and deserve the death penalty. As I have become older and wiser my views have changed. Who am I to decide death is an appropriate form of punishment? Who are we as a society to agree it is ok to take the life of a murderer? Does that not make us the same as the murderer? I have come to terms with my stance against the death penalty in very simple plain terms. I personally would not purposefully commit murder by flipping the switch, giving the lethal injection or pulling the trigger so how or why would I expect someone in our legal system to do this for me. If I believe in the death penalty then I must be capable of committing the same crime as a murderer. I do not believe death is an acceptable form of punishment.
So I went to the meeting last night, and although I figured most of it out, I am still a little confused about the blogging business. As I understand it, we are supposed to use this blog1395 as a discussion, answer response area, and then post our essays in the teacher’s BLOG. If this is correct cool, if not please let me know. Thanks all, nice to see some of you last night.
Hi, Just checking in and to see what up.
I feel a little confused about the use of the blog.
To Anyone that is sure about the use of the blog.
Please comfirm this-
1. Our first intro., should be submitted to the instructor blog, located at the top of the hompage for our section.
( WordPress.com americancultures )
2. After intro all the rest are posted on our sec. # blog
3. Are we going to use the in box located at the top of our Home page?
The intro should NOT be put into this blog. I said it before- but i dunno if anyone read my comment. #1 on Pam’s blg is correct. #2. I’m pretty sure but if someone knows differently speak out!. Judith didn’t mention anything about the inbox- although you would think that our papers would be sent there. She wants us to post them. The question is WHERE???
I read in the “Getting Started” section of the homepage that we are to post our written work on our own blog. Look at #4 to confirm this. However, the paragraph goes on to say there are only three blogs: hers, and one for each section. My best guess is to post our papers in our own blog. I was not at the meeting but this is what I understand from the homepage. I hope this helps a little.
Okay, So Just read everyone’s blogs and here is what I know.
The introduction and how we feel about the death penalty should be posted on the Blog with no number behind it.

scroll down to: registration tell all
click on : (#) commets ; the # changes when someone posts a blog, last time I checked it was 35 commets
I am still confused about where to post no prob, So i posted it here.
hey i can see everyone is confused about the blog, but i am confused about our first assignment, i understand that we have to write like 2 pages, did she say at last nights meeting if it was double spaced??? Oh and this Michael F. guy we are supposed to read is one confusing fellow at times so i am thinking it is going to be hard to write about him. And are we supposed to read the whole book of Michael???? So if anyone knows these answers or has some insight on the paper or the book please blog.
See Judith’s latest post about the double-spacing. Last night she said she is talking about 500 words, if that is easier to understand. Section 1396 of Human 6 is supposed to be posting to the other blog (listed as 1396). Did this help or just offer more confusion?
Everyone keeps saying that we have to post our assignments on our own blog… We have individual blogs?? I don’t think any of us know where to post our assignments. Jade Dant- I saw the life of David Gale and it tweaked my perception about the death penalty for sure!!
I thought our assignments were to be uploaded in the in box for the instructor and that we are to comment about the readings and assignments in our class blog. Can anyone confirm this for me?
I am so confused still! Does anyone know when the homework assignmenst are due by and are we supposed to be writing about the books aof the links on focault? thank you
Homework is due sunday by midnight. If you click on the schedule box it will show you what we are suppose to write about. Question is are we suppose to post it on 1395?? I know that we aren’t uploading it for the intrusctor.
So we only post our work in this blog, and not upload it into the “in box” for the instructer, i am sorry for the questions i just wasn’t there for the face to face meeting
Jonna- yeah David Gale altered my perception of the death penalty too, i didn’t think it would actually end that way, it was a pretty crazy movie. I think David Gale had it better off then some of the people in the Michel Foucault book, cuz some people are like tortured for 18 days with like boiling body parts and acid usage. Back in the day execution was pretty horrific, but i guess someone would think twice about commiting a crime back then. Dude and the executioners would sometimes be punished if they weren’t good enough. Well if someone has a really good grasp of this book and has already started to write something, would you post an example of your writing to give others ideas. It would be greatly appreciated.
It appears to me that we respond to each other here on the blog, but when I read the home page about our papers it gives us directions for the proper paper heading and font size. Do we write our papers as word documents and the up load them to the inbox? Does anyone have a clear understanding on how we are supposed to turn in our papers?
Now for everyone that is confused on how go about trying to find ideas from the book of mumble jumble go to this website it totally breaks down the book and the ideas within to help you further understand the book seriouly go to it before writing your paper because i made the mistake of writing a paper and wasting my time.
ok…I got here but i am still really confused as to where we are suppose to post our first official blog????and how to go about it?? is it just like this but in a diff area??Please let me know..
My understanding is that after posting our intro to the blog we will email her our 2 pages but I may be way off as I am just as confused as everyone else.
Ok so I e-mailed Judith and this is exactly what she told me about posting. The 1396 class is supposed to post on the 1396 blog. We are NOT using the in-box for this assignment (I don’t know about future assignments, she didn’t specify). I hope this helps.
Not sure if anyone else had a hard time completely understanding the readings on Foucault, but I did. Can anyone help me in understanding any of these or word them in a way that I will know what is trying to be said? I feel like I could have wrote more about this subject if I understood it better.
“By solemnly inscribing offences in the field of objects susceptible of scientific knowledge, they provide the mechanisms of legal punishment with a justifiable hold not only on offences, but on individuals; not only on what they do, but also on what they are, will be, may be” (18).
Do not concentrate the study of the punitive mechanisms on their ‘repressive’ effect alone, on their ‘punishment’ aspects alone, but situate them in a whole series of their possible positive effects, even if these seem marginal at first sight. As a consequence, regard punishment as a complex social function.
“In short, try to study the metamorphosis of punitive methods on the basis of a political technology of the body in which might be read a common history of power relations and object relations. Thus, by an analysis of penal leniency as a technique of power, one might understand both how man, the soul, the normal or abnormal individual have come to duplicate crime as objects of penal intervention; an din what way a specific mode of subjection was able to give birth to man as an object of knowledge for a discourse with a ‘scientific’ status” (24).
Belated Hello. My name is Chris Henderson. Judith, in her kindness, let me add the class late. This is attempt number two taking this class and it seems the format has changed a bit. I had to drop the class about one month in last (spring) semester for work/personal reasons. I enjoyed the debates and look forward to playing ‘devils advocate’. Hopefully people won’t take anything personally this time around, I don’t actually condone the death penalty. But I don’t play softball, I take Debate as well.
Focault was a big hurdle for me, and seems to be for others too. You are not alone. The reading seems to be extracted from something which we don’t know the context. It’s just hard to read. He has the empirical complexity of Noam Chomsky but with absolutely no linguistic finesse. Can’t wait to move away from Focault.
Not sure why but I was just looking for my intro that I did last week and am seeing that it is no longer here? not sure what happened but here goes again.
Hi my name is Jamie Danford and this is my first time taking an online course here at the SRJC. I am a Full time student at Cal State Long Beach working on my double major in Bus Management and Operations Management. I will walk next spring with a few classes to finish up with in the summer.
Background:
I grew up in Sonoma and Marin county and graduated from San Marin High in 1999. I worked for an Asbestos Litigation lawfirm, Brayton Purcell, for a few years to gain some office experience and figure out if I wanted to be a lawyer until I could claim my indepent living and income from my parents in order to get financial aid through FASFA. Well making 30 a yr. does not qualify you to collect Financial aid so I worked as a waitress at Kodiak Jacks in Petaluma for a year going to school full time at the JC. I then was able to get the doyle with my good grades and low income allowed me to collect with the FASFA. I love how people say they can’t afford to go to school and then they realize they can after I tell them my strategy. I took a lot of late work nights and days without sleep but it can be done. I was also very involved with school politics. I was senator of the Petaluma Campus for a year and also during that time I CHaired the General Elections Committe, and also sat on the Graduation Speaker Committe. Some of my interests are horseback ridding, Wakeboarding, running or walking along the beach and playing cards with the family.
I currently Live in Manhattan Beach and commute to school in Long Beach. Yes I travel on the 405 Parking lot and it’s not fun.
Fortunately I do not know any one who has been in prison.
I am somewhat on the fence about the death penalty:
Economically I think it satifies our budget and morally for some people gives rest to their hate for people that have killed a loved one. Personally however I think that morally it is wrong.
whoa???? still really confused about where to post at and how to do it?? I just wrote the instructor because I guess I had posted my last assignment wrong…. I DO NOT HA A CLUE as to what I should be doing…I have been looking up and down these blog things and I still dontunderstand where and how to post?? PLEASE HELP ME!! I dont want to lose any credit!!
